Anam Cara is an old Celtic description meaning ‘soul friend’. We consider the horses who partner with us soul friends. What a privilege it is to call horses our soul friends! Their unique equine perspective on the world encourages and challenges us, in a completely non-judgmental way. In our equine facilitated wellness programmes we find the horses inviting us to reflect on habits that no longer serve us, walking beside us in mutual trust and respect. The horses meet us where we are at, always encouraging and moving us forward toward better ways of constructing our lives.
“As humans we are always trying to tame landscape and while we are in it we are always going somewhere else. Only the animals seem to be totally at home in landscape. They carry enormous witness to the stillness and silence of landscape. Our world is becoming more busy and noisy. We are pushing silence out of our lives at a rate that suggests a fear of what it has to say to us about ourselves. Silence is the voive of the mystery. Silence lets us dream again. Interaction with landscape can heal you if you respect it.” – Pat O’Donoghue, 2010 in Foreword to Four Elements: Reflections on Nature by John O’Donoghue Author of Anam Cara.
The bond between humans and horses is ancient and a journey that transcends the physical realm, offering profound emotional and spiritual growth. Horses, with their inherent sensitivity and intuition, act as mirrors to our inner selves, reflecting our emotions and encouraging us to confront and understand our feelings. This relationship is about forging a deep connection based on trust, respect, and mutual understanding.
Horses have long been revered for their majestic presence and therapeutic qualities. In equine-facilitated therapy and counselling, they play a pivotal role in helping individuals heal from trauma, manage stress, and improve mental health. In our wellness sessions we don’t ever ride the horses, instead we move beside them. The process involves interacting with horses in a way that fosters emotional awareness and resilience. As prey animals, horses are highly attuned to their environment and the emotions of those around them, making them exceptional partners in therapeutic settings.
The journey with horses begins with building trust. Horses communicate primarily through body language and energy. They respond to our intentions and emotions, requiring us to be present and authentic in our interactions. This non-verbal communication can be incredibly healing, as it encourages us to align our inner state with our outward actions. For many, the act of grooming, leading, or simply being in the presence of a horse can bring a sense of peace and grounding.
As we progress in our journey, the relationship with horses deepens.
The spiritual aspect of this journey cannot be overstated. Many find that spending time with horses brings them closer to nature and a higher sense of purpose. The rhythm of a horse’s gait, the tranquility of the natural space, and the meditative act of caring for these animals all contribute to a profound sense of well-being and spiritual fulfillment.
In essence, the journey with horses is a path to self-discovery and personal growth. It teaches patience, compassion, and the value of living in the moment. For those who embark on this journey, the rewards are immeasurable, leading to a more balanced, joyful, and connected life. Through the eyes of a horse, we can see our true selves and find the courage to embrace our vulnerabilities and strengths.
Engaging with horses offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with nature and our inner selves, fostering a holistic approach to health and wellness. Whether through equine-facilitated therapy, or simply spending time in their presence, horses have the power to touch our souls and transform our lives.
